How to Help Loved Ones Diagnosed with Mesothelioma
Posted on Friday, May 13, 2011 by my style
When someone you love has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, the news can be devastating and you may feel powerless to help. But this is not necessarily the case. Although you may not be able to cure them, you can help them make the most of their options and the time they have left. Here are a few suggestions:
Educate Yourself and Your Loved One About Mesothelioma
There is power in knowledge. If you can better understand mesothelioma, what mesothelioma treatment options there are and what symptoms to expect, you will be better prepared to face the challenges that may come your way. In addition, this knowledge can help you calm your fears and apprehensions about mesothelioma and what your loved one is experiencing. Be sure to get your information from valid sources such as the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute and other resources your mesothelioma doctor recommends.
Be Patient and Supportive
People with mesothelioma can become tired quickly and may feel drained of energy and life. As someone they trust, you can encourage them to do the things they love to do and to enjoy themselves as much as is possible. This may not be an easy task, but it will be greatly appreciated in the long run. Be aware that anxiety and depression are common in mesothelioma patients, so you can be supportive by listening to what your loved one has to say and sharing your own feelings.
Help with the Treatment
When diagnosed with a life-threatening disease, it can be difficult to pay attention and remember all the details of mesothelioma doctor’s treatment instructions. You can help by attending doctor's visits with your loved one and keeping a journal of the medical information given, such a medications, treatment options, etc. You can also make sure the doctor knows about all the symptoms and side effects your loved one is experiencing, as they may forget to mention them while at the office.
Assist with Legal Matters
A diagnosis of mesothelioma can be accompanied by legal proceedings, due to mesothelioma's relationship with asbestos. You can help your loved one by managing the process (for example, maintaining legal documents) and working with a mesothelioma attorney to make sure all the details of the case are taken care of.
Remember to Take Care of Yourself, As Well
Don’t do this all alone. Seek out support from friends, family, and mesothelioma support groups for caregivers. Keep a journal of your experience, writing down what you feel so you can work through it. Get enough sleep, eat right and exercise. If you run yourself down, you cannot provide good support to your loved one.
