It’s time to clean your makeup bag!

Like every woman, I have a pile of makeup in my drawer that I "sometimes" use. However, beauty products do have a shelf life. Do you ever wonder how long is too long to keep makeup products? Not all makeup has the same shelf life, so it’s important to be aware of what it is. Grungy makeup bags aren't just icky; they can harbor germs and bacteria that can actually make you sick or cause an eye infection. Too-old makeup can also lose pigment and texture, making shades turn muddy on complexions and crease, and possibly even aging your look beyond your years.

Here's a quick guide on the shelf lives of typical beauty products. And I’m gonna list them in alphabetical order.

Concealer: Up to 12 months.
Brushes Wash: Every 2-3 months in a mild detergent.
Cream & gel cleansers: 1 year.
Eyeshadow: Will also last up to 3 years.
Foundation: Check the ingredients. A water-based foundation will last up to 12 months, oil-based Lip liner: Up to 3 years.
Lipstick: Some experts say 1-2 years. Others say up to 4 years.
Mascara: This product expire the fastest. Throw out after 4 months.
Nail Polish: Up to 12 months, depending on the quality and how many times you take it on a plane (the cap always unscrews on me during flights, leaving my purse a -- fume-y -- mess!).
Powder: 2 years.
Pencil eye liner: Should be sharpened regularly. Will last up to 3 years.
Sponges Wash: weekly and discard monthly.
will last up to 18 months.

Looking good is a combination of knowing what works for you and learning the skills to apply colors in a complimentary way to your skin tone and facial features. When your makeup expires or starts to look weird, the best thing to do is to let it go. You do not want to cause any irritation to your face which might be difficult to get rid of.
